Which is a better place to visit, hanoi or ho chi minh city?

i was planning on traveling through thailand for a few days, but due to the protests will not be able to. suggestions for two 23 year olds to visit hanoi or hcm? we like historical things/excursions, but also want to make sure there's nightlife and the city will be cheap to eat/drink/shop in. thanks!
